The most popular version (Mexico & US) is used to keep children on good behavior and to keep them away from lakes and rivers. A lot of foreigners who hear about the story associate her with Rusalka because she (Rusalka) is known to be viscious toward pregnant women. She (La Llorona) is also associated with Jason and Medea because Jason leaves Medea for another woman which causes her (Medea) to kil her children.
